Bach Cantata No 32 Liebster Jesu, Mein Verlangen The concept of music as an art of controlling emotion reached its peak in the Baroque era. The centre-piece of a conference devoted to Music & Emotion, this concert by the Dunedin Consort, directed by John Butt, showcases the power of music to express love, death, and spirituality in the Lutheran Baroque with works by Schütz, J. S. Bach, Schmelzer, Corelli, and Errollyn Wallen. Schütz's motet O quam tu pulchra es epitomises his genius for rhetorical word painting. Bach's ‘dialogue' cantata BWV 32, Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen, is one of the most immediately engaging of his many sacred cantatas. It features a dialogue between bass and soprano, and unusually rich instrumentation, with the sighing appoggiaturas of the oboe in the opening movement capturing the ‘longing' of the title. The Dunedin perform a Lamento by the early German master Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, and a trio sonata by Corelli. They are also pleased to include in their programme a new work, specially commissioned by the Dunedin, by Errollyn Wallen. Her two-movement Comfort me with Apples is based on the Song of Songs, also a source for much of Schütz's own music. http://www.dunedin-consort.org.uk/diary.aspx FAULTLINE WEDNESDAY 21 & THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER 2009 Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company Dance Umbrella Queen Elizabeth Hall South Bank Centre TIGER COLLECTION (for organ) - WORLD PREMIERE FRIDAY 2 OCTOBER 2009 John Butt, organist Glasgow University NAKED AGAIN- Club Night THURSDAY 1 OCTOBER 7:30pm Blackheath Halls Contemporary Music Group Improvisations, films, dance and dj sets.
